The Benightitudes: Sermon for a New America
And seeing the barking multitudes he went up into a mountainous tower of glass and steel. And when he was set with silk and cigar his lackeys came unto him.
And he opened his mouth, and taught them, growling:
Blessed are the wealthy in funds: for theirs is the kingdom of plunder.
Blessed are they that scorn: for they shall be unburdened by compunction.
Blessed are the strong: for they shall disinherit the weak.
Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after selfishness: for they shall be filled.
Blessed are the merciless: for they shall obtain power.
Blessed are the impure in heart: for they shall make an idol of lust.
Blessed are the hatemongers: for they shall be called my disciples.
Blessed are they which persecute the dark-skinned: for theirs is the country I give them.
Blessed are ye, when ye shall revile women, and persecute the exile and alien, and say all manner of evil against those ye dispute, for my sake.
Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in America: for so persecuted you feel, though the prophets which were before you tried to do their best for you.
Ye are the salt of the earth. But if the salt have lost his savor? Who cares? It is good for nothing but to be cast out and to be trodden under jackboots.
I am the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill must be rid of its losers.
